Mambilla
About this Destination
The Mambilla Plateau is a geographical anomaly in Nigeria. While most of the country experiences a tropical climate with intense heat, Mambilla sits at an average elevation of 1,600 meters (5,249 feet) above sea level, resulting in a temperate, remarkably cool climate year-round. This unique high-altitude environment has earned it the nickname 'The Europe of Nigeria', featuring sprawling, lush green rolling hills that stretch endlessly into the horizon.
The plateau is home to Chappal Waddi (The Mountain of Death), which stands at 2,419 meters, making it the highest point in Nigeria and West Africa. The rich, volcanic soil and cool weather make Mambilla the only region in Nigeria capable of successfully cultivating tea, leading to the establishment of vast, picturesque tea estates that blanket the valleys in vibrant green.
Reaching Mambilla is an adventure in itself, involving a steep, winding drive up the escarpment through breathtaking hairpin bends. Once there, the air is crisp and clean. Visitors can explore the cascading waterfalls, interact with the local pastoralist communities who herd cattle across the highlands, or simply sit back with a freshly brewed cup of local tea while watching the mist roll over the mountains.
